Feedback on the breakout sessions attended by the 9 Principals and teachers who travelled to Rotorua.

Break out 4:
Some pointers when working with with the 'cup half full teacher'
:
  • Do you think there is something that might work for you? (when getting people to identify different strategies relating to their work as teachers)
  • After a meeting: get people to jot down what decisions they have made, (rather than using the decision of another teacher).
  • Don't solution talk. Tell people who want to meet with a problem to come to the meeting with a solution.
  • Use 'and' rather than 'but' and so building on a process of ideas.

Break Out 6: Does Content Matter?
  • A challenge for students in making connections. Often links in a variety of subject areas are so separate, teaching in subjects make connections hard.
  • The new curriculum is an 'outcomes' curriculum where as the fomer one was a context curriculum.
  • When working with the broader curriculum students need to learn the 'essence' of science, social studies and technology.
  • Each student's ultimate learning succcess is more important than the covering of particular achievment objectives.

Key Note Speaker: Leading from Behind (Tom Hoorr)
Some things to ponder over:

  • Where you are is more important than what you know.
  • However good I am ---- I'll sound better.
  • Have I offend the people I want to offend?
  • Am I making new mistakes?
  • Excellence versus perfection - discussion point.

Keynote Speaker: Dr Thomas Hoerr was dynamic on leadership. Here are a few of his thoughts about a Lead Teacher's job:
  • Teachers are the key factor in determining the quality of the school.
  • A leader's job is not to make teachers happy, it is to facillitate and support teachers' growth.
  • A leader's own growth is key. We must take care of ourselves. We must learn. We must fly.
  • He shared lots of myths about Staff Meetings! (You can e mail him for his notes for more info)
  • Leadership is about relationships. (For teachers, as for Principals and other Leaders.)
Good Book "The Checklist Manifesto" By Atu Gawande. (E mail Thomas for the article)
  • Useful Quote to think about when making decisions, or delegating etc Is it: Your decision, my decision, our decision"
  • More focus on collaboration. (Distributed intelligence) Use the resources around you.
  • Create a setting in which everyone grows. Teachers talking productively about children and curriculum etc.
  • Important factors:
H: Hiring wisely: Teacher input. Staff expectations?
E: Evaluate on professionalism / collegiality (Helping others learn- mentoring, presenting etc.)
A: Administrators: Abdicate some of your authority. Assign. Accept.
L: Learning by everyone is the key to success.
  • Failing Wisely: We teach our kids how to win, but not how to fail. They need to learn how to handle failure.
Book: "Mindset" by Carol Dwek.
A reminder: Praise effort, not intelligence.
